9月18日 Ho cinquantadue anni e mi dedico seriamente alla scrittura da quando ne avevo ventuno. Spesso mi capita di domandarmi se scrivere stia diventando più facile. Temo che la risposta sia no. A quanto pare scrivere non è un'attività che si semplifica con l'andare del tempo; non è possibile "buttare giù" un romanzo solo perchè fai questo mestiere da qualche decennio. Certe volte mi pare che la questione si riduca a un problema di forma fisica: scrivere richiede un'enorme quantità di energia. Invecchiare non aiuta. E' fondamentale convincersi di avere tra le mani qualcosa di nuovo, di fresco, qualcosa che sia decisamente diverso da tutto ciò che l'ha preceduto, anche se può trattarsi solo di un'illusione. Poi naturalmente occorrerà scavare più a fondo ogni volta e compiere ricerche accurate per arrivare a un materiale che non assomigli a quello già utilizzato. Con il passare degli anni sai sempre qualcosa di più sulle tue abitudini mentali, sulla struttura dei tuoi pensieri. Diventi molto scettico e vuoi evitare il più possibile di ripeterti. Continuo a credere che tra un romanzo e l'altro sia necessario inserire un pezzo di vita; mi pare che ogni romanzo debba essere scritto da una persona leggermente diversa.
